About Brian Garcia

Brian Garcia is running for the Tempe Union High School District Governing Board.

Brian's family

For Brian's family, education is the American Dream. Brian's dad left Mexico at 18 to support his family. His mother fled violence from El Salvador to seek a better life for their family. Upon becoming citizens, they fought to ensure Brian and his brother Aaron had access to opportunities.

Brian is the first in his family to graduate from high school, college, earn a masters, and now attend ASU Law. Brian's journey has been successful because of teachers, mentors, and community leaders that have helped him along the way.

Teachers Like Mindy

Ms. Mindy Udall was Brian's Social Studies teacher. Mindy taught Brian the importance of civic engagement and financial literacy. Mindy made sure everyone learned how to balance a checkbook. It's teachers like Mindy that have supported Brian and his brother Aaron through the various challenges first-generation students face. Now, Brian is running to do the same for all of our students.

Why Brian is Running

Brian is running to fight for our students, families, and community. First, Brian wants to ensure our students should have the support and skills they need to thrive in college and in their careers. Second, our families deserve transparency and meaningful outreach. Third, engagement with our community to support our students, educators, and schools is critical.

Even though educators like Mindy helped Brian get to college, he still felt unprepared about the transition into college where he was responsible for advancing his own education and his family. Brian's brother Aaron, a junior at Corona, has expressed similar frustrations and experiences. Brian is proactive, experienced, and passionate to garner the change we need for our students, families, and community.

Brian graduated from McClintock High School. Go Chargers! In addition to facilitating education outreach for Arizona Congresswoman Sinema, Brian has served as an AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) facilitator and tutor at McClintock. Through AVID, Brian supported our students as they worked through their core classes and applied for colleges and scholarships. Brian understands the challenges our students face. It’s our job to ensure our students have the support and skills they need to thrive in college and the workforce! When our students succeed, our community does too!

On graduation day, Brian envisions handing his brother Aaron and his peers their diploma. A day that embodies the hard work and sacrifice we make in pursuit of the American Dream.
